Line spacing

Line spacing (aka leading) is the vertical distance between baselines of each line of text. It plays an important role in legibility. Too much line spacing creates too much white space. Not enough line spacing makes text difficult to read.  Follow these rules to strike the right balance.

LARGE HEADING/TITLES
Optimal line spacing for large headlines/titles is between 90-105% of the point size
SECONDARY/MEDIUM-SIZED HEADINGS
Optimal line spacing for secondary/medium-sized headlines is between 120-140% of the point size
LONG BODY TEXT
Optimal line spacing for long body text is between 150-160% of the point size

Line length

Line length describes the width of the content. The recommended line length is between 50 to 75 characters (per line) for longer body text. This allows for optimal readability.

LONG BODY TEXT
The optimal line length for body text is 50–75 characters (per line)

Color in typography

Headline copy is always set in black or white. Never set headline copy in color against a color background. As a rule, always make sure there's enough contrast. The examples below have passed the WCAG 2.0 level AA, which requires a contrast ratio of at least 4.5:1 for normal text and 3:1 for large text. Refer to the color for precise values.

Mistakes to avoid

Headline copy is always set in black or white. Never set headline copy in color against a color background. As a rule, always make sure there's enough contrast. The examples below have passed the WCAG 2.0 level AA, which requires a contrast ratio of at least 4.5:1 for normal text and 3:1 for large text. Refer to the color for precise values.

Lack of contrast
Avoid lack of contrast at all costs. Text without contrast is not accessible.
Tight line spacing
Avoid tight line spacing. It makes the type difficult to read.
Too many font weights
Avoid using varied font weights in headlines or paragraphs.
Text too small
Don't typeset text too small. Minimal web text size is 16px and 10-12pt for print materials.
All caps
Don't set the type in all caps for headlines or paragraphs. There's no need to yell.
Color on color
Don't set color type on top of a color background. It's difficult to read.

System fallbacks

Sometimes technology keeps us from using DS Indigo in a way that makes sense for the constraints. Luckily, we have simple sans-serif fallbacks to lean on. Use one of these two fallback typefaces.
